Case scenario:
“Rory Garcia, is an elderly woman that has died of COVID-19. Before she died she reported that she was worried that if she did die her family would try to find her body and complete rituals. She did not want her family anywhere near Covid. She leaves behind a grieving family. A husband, a son and his wife, and 5 grandchildren. She was especially close to Emily, the second oldest grandchild. Mrs. Garcia’s body has been placed along side many other people that have died from Covid. The deceased have been placed in a church basement awaiting burial. Freezer trucks are in route in order to serve as temporary morgues until the bodies are able to be buried. Her family is unaware that Mrs. Garcia has died, and family members are asking you where she is. They are desperate to get a report of her current condition and the husband has already had one panic attack due to worry. He is reporting chest pain and cannot sleep due to worrying about his wife. The doctors and nurses are all very busy and are not able to speak with deceased family members. You are concerned that if you tell them they will break the city’s curfew and will attempt to reclaim her body from the church in order to perform cultural rituals associated with death. You know a little bit about their culture but still have much to learn.”
This week you will be addressing an ethical dilemma this week. You are Rory Garcias social worker. Be aware that this family is of a culture that has deeply rooted rituals that take place over the body within the first few hours after death (candles, oils, sage lighting, prayer etc. …)
